DutiesStudents will be responsible for conducting client intake and communication to gather facts about each case, followed by legal analysis to spot relevant issues and information. Students will use this information to draft case summaries, outline a scope of representation, and assign cases to attorneys with appropriate skills and background necessary to handle each case. Students will be exposed to a variety of legal issues, such as copyright, trademark, patents, entity counseling, non-profit incorporation/merger/dissolution, dispute resolution, labor and employment, landlord/tenant problems, and tax issues. Students will also gain valuable client management and communication skills through interactions with PVLA applicants.
Agency descriptionPVLA, a program of the Arts + Business Council of Greater Philadelphia, is a pro bono legal referral service for low income individual artists and creative entrepreneurs, as well as arts & cultural non-profit organizations and small businesses, seeking assistance with arts-related legal issues. PVLA also provides pro bono patent prosecution referrals to inventors statewide through our PA Patent program.
Time requirementsDuring the fall and spring semesters, students are expected to work a minimum of 10-12 hours per week, up to a maximum of 20 hours a week. During the summer, students are expected to work full-time. Our office hours are 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, M-F.
Position requirementsStudents should possess superior oral and written communication skills, and should maintain a high degree of organization and attention to detail. Students should also be well versed in legal analysis and issue spotting. Prior client management experience, affiliation with the arts, and familiarity with relevant legal practice areas are a plus (i.e. IP, contracts, entity formation, etc.)
Substantive prerequisitesStrong preference will be shown for students who have taken coursework relevant to the legal practice areas dealt with, including IP law, Entertainment law, Corporate law and Contract law.
