Community Leadership Center (CLC) Lecture Series: The State of Public Charter Schools in New Jersey

Friday, November 20, 2015, 9 am - 12 pm

Dr. GloriaBonilla-Santiago Building, 12th Floor, 130 N. Broadway, Camden, NJ 08102

The emergence of charter schools has shaken up public education in urban settings. Charter schools have proven to be successful vehicles for community development and urban neighborhood revitalization. Yet, so many structural and funding models exist. Parents and families know that they can have a better school to send their child to, but how do they reconcile the differences in educational philosophies, curriculum, and neighborhood engagement? Various charter school organizations are establishing a prominent presence in distressed urban environments, like Camden. Education leaders can provide a clear delineation and breakdown of the various models, styles, and methods so that families and taxpayers have a better understanding of who and what are entering their communities.

Parking will be available in Camden Technology Center Parking Garage located at 601 Cooper Street.

From Sideline to Frontline: The Making of a Reproductive Justice Plaintiff

October 10th, 2013. 6-8pm. Rutgers University School of Law-Camden
Ms. Nesset-Sale was the plaintiff in Cleveland Board of Education v. LaFleur , 414 U.S. 632(1974), which struck down as a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment a public school policy excluding teachers from the classroom starting in the fourth month of pregnancy. Ms. Nesset-Sale, now a practicing lawyer who spent 16 years as a public defender, will share her difficult personal journey toward vindication and its meaning for pro bono service, gender discrimination and women's rights to make important decisions about their pregnancies. For more information, see Chapter 13 in Peter Irons The Courage of Their Convictions- Sixteen Americans Who Fought Their Way to the Supreme Court and Jo Carol Nesset-Sale, "From Sideline to Frontline: The Making of a Civil Rights Plaintiff. . .", 7 Georgetown J. of Gender & Law 1 (2006).

Beyond Roe: Reproductive Justice in a Changing World

October 11, 2013
Using the 40th Anniversary of the Supreme Courts decision in Roe v. Wade as a point of departure, this conference will bring together scholars, activists, and practitioners to discuss a wide range of issues related to reproductive justice and reproductive oppression. The conference deliberately focuses on justice rather than rights to signal a commitment to discussing the regulation of reproduction, in all the forms that such regulation takes, from a social justice perspective. The conference will explore and study diverse experiences rooted in differences that emerge from race, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, religion, ethnicity, histories of incarceration, education level, immigration status, age and the like. With a broad range of thinkers addressing a multiplicity of issues, the conference will offer an opportunity to look beyond Roe and abortion to explore how to create a world in which reproductive justice is available to all. Byllye Avery, founder of the Black Women's Health Imperative (formerly the National Black Women's Health Project), will be the featured speaker at the conference.

If you would like Continuing Legal Education Credits (available in NY, NJ, PA) registration and fee information can be found HERE. For the main conference Web site, please visit http://camlaw.rutgers.edu/beyond-roe-conference/

Chancellor's Signature Events Series Committee

April 18, 2013
Overview As is appropriate for a public research university, RutgersCamden is working to grow and increasingly be recognized as a vibrant center for intellectual and cultural activity, serving the campus community and attracting participants from the Delaware Valley and around the world. In an effort to encourage thoughtful activity of this nature, the chancellor has established the Signature Series and Events Committee and charged that standing committee to develop a robust schedule that will increase engagement among on-campus and external audiences. The committee invites the submission of proposals for the development of events that would be held during the 2013-14 academic year. These proposals offer an opportunity for faculty to: Develop an event (e.g., academic conference, public lecture) that leverages your research area with campus strengths to attract internal and external audiences. Seek modest financial, planning, and marketing support from campus administration. Position RutgersCamden as a regional and national leader in scholarly discourse. Share your work and research. Already have an event planned? You are still welcome to submit your information and apply.
