Course Description

601:625. REFUGEE LAW AND POLICY (2) S

Bosniak, Eaton

This course will examine the international refugee regime from a legal and policy perspective. Particular attention will be paid to the definition of “refugee” under international and US law. The course will focus on the asylum process in the US, and on developing doctrines of eligibility for asylum protection here.  It will address various current policy debates relating to deterrence and detention of asylum-seekers and the treatment of refugee children. Other forms of legal protection for forced migrants such as the Convention against Torture and temporary protected status will be considered. The course will adopt a comparative perspective, consulting legal norms and referencing policy debates from other national and regional settings.
