Course Description

601:560 APPELLATE ADVOCACY (2)

Finkelstein

This course provides students with advanced training in appellate advocacy, including the study of the rhetoric of persuasion, the preparation of appellate briefs and effective oral advocacy, and will include an introduction to appellate procedure.  This course is designed to expose you to the fundamentals of appellate practice.  Although we will discuss appellate practice broadly, our class assignment involves a fictional case appealed to the United States Supreme Court.  As a result, we will focus on the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure in this class.  Your primary written assignment will be an appellate brief due at the end of the term.  At the end of the term, you will perform an oral argument in the role of either appellant or appellee. At the conclusion of the course, you should feel prepared to argue effectively whether in a moot court or before an actual tribunal.
