The course will cover civil litigation topics beginning with case initiation and continuing through discovery, motion practice, pre-trial practice, and selected topics related to trial practice and appeals in Pennsylvania state courts. Additionally, students will examine the effects of local rules on practice and procedure in the federal courts in Pennsylvania. Reading assignments will include statutes, the Pennsylvania Rules of Civil Procedure, local court rules, and caselaw. Throughout the course, particular emphasis will be placed on the real-world application of the Pennsylvania Rules of Civil Procedure, as well as the practical and strategic differences between those rules and the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
