DutiesIntern/Extern will attend court and client meetings, review discovery and help formulate case strategy, participate in meetings with prosecutors re plea negotiations, identify issues and research and draft legal memoranda or briefs, appear in court under supervision of a staff attorney for various proceedings. Student will discuss legal issues and strategies with staff attorneys, will assist in and perhaps conduct negotiations with prosecutors, and will appear in court under staff supervision. Court appearances will start with simple matters such as arraignments and first appearances and may progress to more complicated matters as student demonstrates proficiency.
Agency descriptionPublic Defeder office handling adult and juvenile criminal matters in the Cape May County Superior Court. Student will learn to interview clients regarding cases and identify issues requiring research, investigation or motion practice. Depending on students progress, she may be able to conduct these meetings without a staff attorney and report back. Student will assist clients in review of audio/video discovery. Student can assist with preparation for testimony of clients or witnesses. Student will also attend meetings with client to discuss trial strategy and/or plea negotiations.
Time requirementsOur schedule is flexible. We have attorneys in court every day of the week.
