You are invited you to attend, "Human Rights Activism in the Middle East: Perspectives from the Ground," a conversation with Aya Hijazi, Human Rights Activist and Founder of the Belady Foundation, on Monday, October 30th at 5:30 p.m. in the Bergen Room at the Paul Robeson Campus Center.

The event is free to attend, but registration is requested by October 27. Click here to register!

Born to an Egyptian mother and a Lebanese father, Aya Hijazi is an American citizen who became interested in social activism. To further her understanding of social justice, she studied Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University in the United States and law at Cairo University in Egypt. During the Arab Spring, she returned to her native homeland, Egypt. Along with her husband, Mohamed Hassanein, she established an NGO, "Belady," an Island for humanity.

During the crackdown on NGOs, police forces raided Belady and arrested Aya. She was imprisoned on fabricated charges for three years and was released after her case received international attention. She is now back in the United States where she restarted Belady to defend humanity and freedom.

This event is sponsored by Rutgers Center for Security, Race and Rights, in partnership with the Center for Migration and the Global City, Rutgers Transnational Legal Initiative, Rutgers Association of International Relations, and Rutgers-Newark Students for Justice in Palestine.
