High-profile attorney Nancy Erika Smith graduated from Rutgers Law School in 1980.

When Gretchen Carlson, a former Fox News anchor, sued Roger Ailes, the former chairman of the network for sexual harassment, she turned to Rutgers Law graduate Nancy Erika Smith '80 of Smith Mullin in Montclair, a law firm specializing in employment discrimination, plaintiffs employment litigation and Civil Rights litigation. The story was reported by NJBIZ among many other news outlets.

Smith filed a lawsuit on Carlson's behalf on July 6. Two weeks later Ailes resigned from Fox News. On Tuesday September 6, the parent company of Fox News announced it settled the lawsuit filed by Carlson for a reported $20 million.

Smith issued a news release through her website announcing the settlement and a statement from Carlson. Martin S. Hyman of Golenbock Eiseman Assor Bell & Peskoe LLP served as co-counsel in the case.

The lawsuit and the settlement made national headlines. After the lawsuit was filed, several publications, including The Guardian and Vanity Fair, reported that additional women also claimed to have been harassed by Ailes.
