This course will provide students with the opportunity to learn and apply practical lawyering skills in the rapidly evolving field of health care privacy, data security, and technology.  Healthcare is facing unprecedented challenges as new technologies emerge that improve patient care but present increasing risks to privacy and security, such as cloud computing, electronic health records, telemedicine, and interconnectivity between healthcare technologies.   The class will review substantive legal, business and ethical frameworks governing the use of personal health information, including HIPAA/HITECH, state data breach laws, industry standards regarding data protection, and management of business associates.  Students will act as first year associates to gain experience in drafting communications, negotiating services and related business associate agreements, advising clients on compliance, responding as attorney-on-call on matters regarding privacy in patient care, and tackling a data breach.
