Advanced Trial Advocacy and Competition is an advanced trial advocacy course culminating in a select group of students competing in a national competition. This advanced course will focus on topics such as advanced trial evidence; making appropriate objections and dealing with obstreperous opponents and witnesses; jury instructions; voir dire; damages; trial ethics; mistrials and motions for directed verdict; courtroom technology; public speaking for lawyers; courtroom visuals including real, demonstrative, and illustrative evidence; storytelling; and ethical witness preparation. The course will provide participants with opportunities to perform in a simulated trial setting, followed by individual faculty critique. These performance workshops will be supplemented by lectures on specific issues relating to trial practice. This course will offer skills credit but will not offer writing credit.
