601:620. WORK, LAW, AND THE WELFARE STATE IN THE AGE OF THE PLATFORM ECONOMY (2) WI

Patterson/Solomon

Law has always been a central feature in the regulation of labor. Together with unions, law has regulated many features of the employment relationship, including the creation of the social safety net.  Of course, law is just one factor that affects labor. The other is the economy. We live in an era of unprecedented changes to the labor economy. In this seminar, we will look at the history of labor law and economy. This focus will set us up for discussion of the contemporary platform economy and the role of digitalisation in work. We will read legal materials as well as literature in economics, legal history, and social theory.
