The Center for Security, Race and Rights presents "Islam and Liberalism" as part of its Islamophobia Lecture Series, by Columbia University Professor Joseph Massad at 12 p.m. on Thursday, October 4 in the Baker Trial Court Room at the Center for Law and Justice at 123 Washington St. in Newark.

Massad teaches and writes about modern Arab politics and intellectual history.

Here is a brief description: American anxieties about intolerance, misogyny, and tyranny are projected onto Islam are part of the broader history of European’s use of Islam as a foil in Western liberalism. Professor Massad presents a rich historical record of Christian and liberal discourses aimed at curing Muslims of their supposed illiberal ways. At a time when Muslims and Islam are frequently misrepresented in the media and public discourse, Islam and Liberalism offers a timely and insightful historical context of current events.
