Genevieve Tung is a Reference Librarian and heads the Law Library’s circulation department.
Tell us about what you do at Rutgers Law.

I'm a reference librarian, which means I'm here to help the Law School's faculty and students find and use the law and legal information. That might mean helping a student find sources for a paper, working with our law journals, or creating a research bibliography for a professor. My colleagues and I staff our reference desk, where we help students, attorneys, and members of the public with their legal research, and we teach Advanced Legal Research. I also work with our circulation desk staff and oversee day-to-day operations in the Law Library in Camden.

How did you come to work at a law school?

I loved my own time in law school! When I entered legal practice I realized that my favorite part was digging into legal research and using information management systems, and I decided I wanted to work towards doing that full-time. Being able to use my legal training, do research, and work in an academic environment was a dream come true.

Do you have advice for students who may use your services?

First--please do! The Law Library is here to serve our students, and it's the best part of my job. There are no bad questions at the reference desk; we want to hear about your paper, your source collection, the research you're doing in an externship or clinic, your question about using The Bluebook.

Second--be curious and keep an open mind. Law school trains you to think about analyzing and solving problems in a new way, and doing it well can require you to adapt and broaden the way you find information. It's the perfect time to experiment with different databases and explore how much knowledge is available to you.

What is your favorite part about working at Rutgers Law?

Our students! They are not afraid to tackle hard topics and are motivated to advocate and get things done. When I can help a student unravel and answer a tricky research problem, it's the best feeling.

Any fun facts about yourself or the library that you’d like to share?
