Kori Newallo is one of the outstanding members of the Rutgers Law graduating class of 2019. A transplant from Brooklyn, New York to Plainfield, New Jersey, she studied Political Science & Africana Studies at Rutgers University–New Brunswick before attending Rutgers Law. What will you be doing after graduation?

I will be clerking for the Honorable Judge Deborah Silverman Katz A.J.S.C. Afterward, I want to ultimately work in a mid-size/large firm in either their environmental or corporate department. I want to increase environmental awareness and to assuage the fear behind making ecologically responsible business choices. Big business and a healthy environment can coexist!

What was your favorite course?

Securities Regulation was my favorite course. Professor Russell (Jacob, by his preference) is a wonderful educator and an oddly funny one at that. I never felt more confident in a law school course.

What student organization was your favorite and why?

The Black Law Students Association takes this one. Not only did I find a home within this organization but I generated life long friendships. I found a greater community of people who felt passionate about mentorship and cultivating the great legal minds that, if not for the mentorship, would otherwise be left behind.

What are some of your notable achievements from your time at Rutgers Law?

I was accepted as a Philadelphia Diversity Law Group Fellow, through which I was able to secure a paid legal internship at a wonderful law firm my 1L summer. I was a Garden State Bar Association Scholarship Recipient and a Judge Joshua W. Martin, III Endowed Scholarship Recipient. I was also the president of the Black Law Students Association.

What advice do you have for incoming law students?

Do not allow your GPA or your summer placement (while both important) to validate your worth as a legal professional. There is no one avenue or one timeline behind greatness!
