The procedures set forth below will apply during the Spring 2024 examination period. At the top of this page are links to other exam policies and procedures, along with the link for students to find their anonymous exam number.

SPECIAL NOTE - HOLODECK COURSES:

If you are registered for a course that meets in the Holodeck (especially Newark-based courses), please double check the exam administration method with your professor or please email any questions you have to Assoc. Dean Chase.

Please remember, should you have a problem with an exam, DO NOT CONTACT YOUR PROFESSOR.  Do not write anything in your exam or send any messages to your professor that would in any way compromise your anonymity. It is a violation of the Law school Academic Rule 32 to compromise anonymity on exams.

Anonymous examination numbers

Law school policy requires anonymous grading of your final examinations, identified by assigned anonymous numbers.  This number will change every semester. This number has no correlation to your Rutgers ID number, and is not a number you can choose.  To access your computer-generated anonymous examination number, please click on the link at the top of this page.  This single, assigned, anonymous number should be used on all your exams and is for this semester only. You will receive a different anonymous examination number each semester.  PLEASE NOTE THAT ANY EXAMINATION TURNED IN WITHOUT AN ASSIGNED ANONYMOUS NUMBER WILL RECEIVE AN AUTOMATIC GRADE REDUCTION OF ONE-THIRD OF A GRADE.  If you have any difficulties with acquiring your exam number, contact the IT office.

Computer use during exams

  • Students must use computers for their exam.
  • It is absolutely critical that you set your word processing software to backup automatically every 3 minutes.  We have had numerous unfortunate instances of computer crashes during exams in which students failed to back up their work and were thus seriously disadvantaged.  If you do not know how to set your software for automatic backup, please consult with the law school’s IT personnel before the examination period.  
  • If your exam is in-class, you must arrive at the scheduled testing room where you will sign in, receive test-taking instructions, and pick up all testing materials.
  • Typed exam answers must be submitted electronically via the "Take an Online Exam" link on the student resources webpage.  Again, the law school's IT Department recommends that you save the work both to your local laptop hard drive (or your personal H drive on the law school network) and to an external data source (such as a USB flash drive) to provide two levels of protection.
  • Although not likely, there is always the possibility of a network crash while you are taking an exam. Should the network crash, you will not be granted additional time to complete your exam. It is absolutely critical that you save your work at regular intervals (e.g., every 3 to 5 minutes.  The easiest way to do this is to be sure your word processing software is set to back up automatically). The law school's IT Department recommends, however, that you save the work both to your local laptop hard drive (or your personal H drive on the law school network) and to an external data source (such as a USB flash drive) to provide two levels of protection. Absolutely no extra time is ever allowed to compensate for mechanical malfunctions, or other unforeseen delays related to the use of computers in taking final exams.
  • Students who are specifically authorized by the professor to take their examinations in a room other that the assigned testing room will not receive the 10 minute warning which is announced only in the main testing room. It will be solely the student's responsibility to submit their exams electronically and return all testing materials to the assigned examination room at the posted exam Stop time.
  • Submission of exams.  Students often submit their exams before reviewing them!!  Make sure to review your exam prior to hitting the Approve button.  Exams are not fully submitted until the Approve button has been clicked and a confirmation number has been given.

First Year Exams and Internet Access

According to the Academic Rules, all first year students are prohibited from general internet access during exams (this prohibition may apply to upper-level exams per the exam instructions adopted by the faculty teaching the course). This general prohibition should be read to include not only internet research related to the exam but also general access to the internet for personal reasons including using internet-supported applications such as, but not limited to, those that support instant messaging.

First year students may access any specific material that the faculty has authorized even if those materials, such as the course Canvas page, online textbook or online notes and outlines that you produced, as examples, are accessed via the Internet. Detailed instructions, including whether there are any materials that students will be permitted to access and if so which ones, will be provided for each exam. Students will be bound by the honor code to scrupulously adhere to all restrictions and limitations on access to online and other materials.

If you encounter problems with your exam

If you think there is a problem or ambiguity with examination instructions or with any question, or if you have any other problem during an in-class examination, contact the proctor or Dean on Duty, who will assist you in resolving any issues.  A link to the Dean on Duty schedule is listed at the top of this page.   

If you are unable to ascertain who the Dean on Duty is, then you may contact Associate Dean Louis Thompson (x.6289) or Assoc. Dean Chase (x.2773) or any other member of the administration.  If you have any problems accessing a web-based exam, you should immediately contact the Law School's Online Exam Help via email: help@camden.rutgers.edu or dial 856-225-6274.  As stated above, do not contact the faculty member directly, since that would be a violation of Rule 32.

Final Exam schedule/information/room assignments

At the top of this page is a link to Detailed Exam Information, which contains all exam information, including - whether the exam will be in-class or web-administered, whether it will be open or closed book, which classroom an exam will be administered in, and so forth.

Some of our exams are proctored, and are listed on the Detailed Exam Information page. For these exams, all books, papers, phones, watches, cameras, headphones, hats, sunglasses, and any electronic devices that are not specified for use in the exam instructions MUST be placed at the front or back of the room (this is not an exhaustive list).

You are permitted to leave to use the restroom but please be mindful of your classmates. If you leave the examination room before completing your examination, you must leave all examination materials on the proctor's desk.

Start and stop times for in-class exams

Morning examinations begin promptly at 10:00 a.m.; evening examinations begin promptly at 6:00 p.m.  You must arrive at the testing room at least 15 minutes before the scheduled starting time to sign the roster, located at the examination administrator’s desk. 

At the start of each in-class exam, the person administering the exam will begin by reading the instructions.  Students will be advised of the time permitted to complete the exam.  Exam START and STOP times will be posted.  For example, if a 3-hour exam is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m., but requires 15 minutes for the secretary to read instructions and distribute the exam, it will have a posted exam START time of 10:15 a.m. and STOP time of 1:15 p.m.

Distribution of paper copies and submission by deposit in lockbox

For all in class examinations, exam administrators will distribute paper copies. All materials distributed to students and any completed components of the exam such as Scantron sheets, must be deposited in the designated locked collection box.  Exam administrators will not collect student examinations.  Once materials are deposited into the collection box, it will be impossible to retrieve them or to return them to students.

Lack of timely submission

Secretaries are instructed to leave testing rooms with locked exam collection boxes promptly upon conclusion of the allotted time period.  Any student who fails to deposit an examination in the collection box before the secretary leaves the classroom must submit the exam to Assoc. Dean Chase in Room E308 (day examinations), or for evening exams, to the assigned exam administrator in Room 609.  Tests turned in late will be marked with the length of extra time taken before being given to the professor.  Professors may apply whatever sanctions they deem appropriate for late exams, up to and including refusing to read them.  (Please be aware that in the past, late exams have resulted in sanctions ranging from lowering the course grade by a third of a grade to assignment of a grade of F in the course.  Sanctions are applied at the sole discretion of the instructor.)   If an exam is closed book and/or proctored, students may not continue an examination beyond the allocated time and testing conditions.

If you experience difficulty submitting your exam, please send your exam (as an attachment) to lawexamsend@camden.rutgers.edu. Please be sure to include the name of the course and your exam number (if applicable) in the subject line. You should only utilize this backup method if you are having a problem with this system AND you have sent an email to help@camden.rutgers.edu alerting them to this problem.

EXAM4 Exams

Spring 2024

Some exams are administered via Exam4 Software.  If your exam falls under this category, you must download and test the software prior to your exam.  The software can be found at www.exam4.com.  After going to the webpage, you must click on “law schools”; then “Rutgers Law”; fill out a short registration form; and click ‘submit’.  After the installation of the program is complete, open the program and fill out the sample information as requested by the program.  Then select the ‘practice exam’ option and fill out the other options and then click ‘begin’.  The Exam4 word processor screen should appear.

Headphones and Earplugs

No headphones of any kind, including hearing protectors, may be used in either assigned testing rooms or rooms designated for computer or typewriter use.  Earplugs, however, are permitted.

Students may not be in possession of cell phones, or similar telecommunication devices during in-class examinations.

Certification of No Assistance

In-class examination packets will contain a sheet with a statement certifying that you have neither given nor received assistance in taking the test.  All students are required to supply the requested information, sign and return the certification.

Grades and Transcripts

You will receive an e-mail notice each time the grades in one of your courses are posted.  Grades are supposed to be submitted no later than 30 days following the date of a course's scheduled final exam or the due date of the course’s final paper.

Thereafter, grades are available to students in a variety of formats.  First, you can to learn your own grade for each course you have taken.  Second, you can also see a grade distribution/mean grade chart for course, so that you can compare your performance to that of your classmates.  Another way to access your grades is through the University's online transcript service (a link to this is available on the student information services page).
