Introduction

Rutgers Law School offers several summer session course options, including an eight-week main summer session (seven weeks of classes followed by exams) and two intensive sessions, designed to allow both full- and part-time law students from Rutgers and elsewhere flexibility in planning their academic programs. Enrolling in summer session provides students the opportunity to earn credit towards their graduation requirement, as well as required skills and writing credits. Students may register for up to 11 total credits in the summer term. However, students may only register for one class during intensive sessions. During the main session, students may register for no more than 6 credits at one time for those who are working more than 20 hours per week during the summer, or 8 credits at one time for those who are working less than 20 hours per week.

A benefit of the summer program is that students who feel constrained by the maximum credit-load restrictions of the regular academic term have the chance to broaden their curricular experience. Courses are offered in both day and evening time slots to allow flexibility in attendance options.

This introduction highlights several of our offerings. Many students want opportunities to gain practical experience, and this summer we are offering a full menu of externship opportunities. Please refer to the Course Schedules to see which courses will help students satisfy skills and writing requirements (Academic Rules 6 and 7).

Scheduling

In the main summer session, two-credit courses typically meet four hours per week, three-credit courses typically meet six hours each week, and four-credit first year courses meet eight hours per week. In all limited-enrollment courses, Rutgers students are given first priority for available seats. For the intensive sessions, please pay particular attention to any date notations on the course schedule.

Part-time Students

Part-time students who have completed their first year may take any summer session course if they have completed the prerequisites for that class. Part-time students may also take Professional Responsibility as an alternative to completing this required course in the fall or spring semester.

Employment Certification

Rutgers Law School requires that students working more than 20 hours per week take no more than 6 credit hours at one time in summer session. Accordingly, students who register for more than 6 credit hours at one time must complete the online Employment Certification (link above) stating under penalty of perjury they will not be employed more than 20 hours per week during the summer session.

Registration Procedures for Rutgers Students

Please use the registration link listed at the top of the page to register for Summer Session. However, please read all of the information in this and the other documents in the registration packet before proceeding with registration, especially the sections entitled "Payment of Tuition and Fees" and "Changes of Program, Withdrawals, and Refunds.")
Please note that there are deadlines for both registering for courses via the web registration system and for the payment of your tuition bill. These deadlines are available on the Important Dates link listed above. Please note that course registrations after the deadline come with a $125 late fee.
A number of Summer Session courses are listed as ‘limited enrollment’ and may require lotteries. Students will be able to register for these courses during the registration period, as there will be no caps on enrollment. Please remember, however, that the act of registration does not guarantee a seat in a limited-enrollment course. Instead, after Summer Session registration closes, we will announce which summer courses are over-enrolled. Spaces will be filled according to a procedure which gives highest priority to senior students. If necessary, waiting lists will be established and students will be required to attend the first class meeting of the limited-enrollment course to learn if they are eligible to advance to any vacancies which may occur.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Students who do not receive a guaranteed seat MUST drop the limited-enrollment course via the website absolutely no later than the day after the first day the class meets. Those who fail to drop the course and do not receive a guaranteed seat may lose 50% of the tuition for the course & a "W" on the transcript. Those who are given approval by the instructor to take a guaranteed seat will have the course added by the Law School Registrar.
Critical Legal Analysis will be offered during the main session. Students may enroll in this course either because the Academic Rules require taking the course on the basis of GPA or because the student is seeking to take the course voluntarily. If you are subject to a requirement to take the course, you should enroll prior to, or simultaneously with, taking other courses during summer session. Please note that limits applicable to distance education courses apply. Specifically, the Academic Rules require students to complete 28 credits before enrolling in distance education classes. In addition, students are limited in the total number of distance education credits that may apply to graduation. This limitation is, at present, 15 credits. Distance education courses are those where more that 1/3 of the material is covered in a remote format. If you have questions, please email vlchase@camden.rutgers.edu.

Billing, Late Fees and Other Charges

Rutgers University will send an email to the email address listed on the University's Student Records Database, which students are responsible for keeping current, with term bill payment instructions. Those who have not paid the term bill by the first day of classes may be automatically deregistered by the University. VERY IMPORTANT: In Summer Session, a registered student is fully liable for tuition charges, unless the student properly withdraws from the course or courses in accordance with the procedures and deadlines. Failure to submit the tuition payment and deregistration do not constitute a withdrawal. Students will continue to be billed for courses for which they initially registered and from which they did not properly withdraw.

Adding and Dropping Courses, Withdrawals and Refunds

ADDING / DROPPING COURSES: After initially registering for the Summer Session via the website, students will be free to modify their schedule as needed. But please pay close attention to the following deadlines and their financial implications:

Once registered, students may use the website to add courses up until the first day of class meets. If credit loads increase as a result of any add transaction, the University will bill students for the additional tuition charge. The maximum course load in Summer Session is 11 credits. Those working more than 20 hours per week, cannot enroll for more than 6 credits at one time. Otherwise, the cap is 8 credits at any one time.
Once registered, you may use the website to drop courses up until the first course meeting. After that time, you must contact the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for assistance.

If you decide to drop a course, it will not be listed on your academic transcript if you drop it prior to the drop deadlines listed on the Important Dates page. Note: Students who register for a course and then decide against taking it but fail to properly withdraw will receive a grade of "F" on their academic transcript and will be liable for the tuition charge.
For intensive courses, students may drop the class prior to the third class meeting. Exams are scheduled after the intensive course ends.

Externship Programs (Practice Externship; Judicial Externship) - Camden

Students in Practice Externship positions or in Judicial chambers earn 2 to 5 credits by completing 60 hours of work for each credit, and participating in an online class for which they will post short written assignments. For Practice placements involving student practice in New Jersey, students must be 3L, or have completed 2/3 of their legal education. In Pennsylvania, students must have completed the equivalent of three full semesters. Enrollment is by permission of instructor only: students must consult with Professor Blair Gerold at bag@153@law.rutgers.edu. In most cases, students should identify their own placements, following the usual hiring procedures for the legal practice or chambers of interest. Students must be doing substantial legal work and be supervised by a lawyer or an individual otherwise qualified to supervise, to provide direct supervision and act as Field Placement Supervisor.

Late Fees and Refunds

Students may register for all courses without a late fee penalty up until one week prior to the start of the course.
Students may register for the course and pay a late fee up until the second class meeting.
Students may drop a ccourse and receive a full refund until the second meeting off the course.
Students may withdraw from a course and receive a "W" and a 50% refund through the fourth meeting date.

Writing credits(Rutgers Students Only)

A maximum of one writing credit earned per summer session may be counted toward the 2 writing credits needed for graduation.
