Lyrical: Film Screening
An Atlanta native, Carter never contemplated pursuing a creative career in his youth. Instead, his parents directed him to pursue business, law, or medicine. He chose law school, after which he progressed from a judicial law clerk, to a law firm associate, Assistant US Attorney, senior law firm associate, US Attorney (appointed by President Obama), and then eventually to a senior leader in philanthropy. Along the way, he started writing screenplays in the wee hours of the morning and on weekends (while co-raising 3 kids with his wife) for 20 years. Last year, he decided to act upon his dream of making a movie and shortened a feature script to 17 pages and shot "Lyrical" at Drew University in New Jersey; the film focuses on a privileged law student who must choose between solidarity and separation when he and a group of adjudicated youth are confronted by the police. Carter hopes the film highlights the humanity in all of us, which is a necessary step in reforming the criminal justice system.
