Join us in the Black Box Studio after Machinal's closing performance for a talkback by Professor J.D. King. King will discuss law and capital punishment as they relate to Machinal's plot and theme. 

Professor King has served as a Professor of Law at Rutgers Law School since 2023. Prior to joining the Rutgers Law faculty, King was the James P. Morefield Professor of Law, Director of the Criminal Justice Clinic, and Director of Experiential Education at Washington & Lee School of Law, where he taught from 2008 until 2023. In addition to teaching Criminal Procedure, Evidence, and Professional Responsibility, he was a core faculty member in the Shepherd Interdisciplinary Program on Poverty and Human Capability. Before becoming a law professor, King was a supervising attorney at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. He has a B.A. in History and Religious Studies from Brown University, a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, and an LL.M. in Advocacy from Georgetown University Law Center.

Prior to teaching, in addition to his work as a public defender, King was a law clerk to United States District Judge Richard H. Kyle in Minnesota, a Prettyman Fellow in Trial Advocacy at Georgetown University Law Center, and a court-appointed criminal defense lawyer in United States District Court for the District of Wyoming. King was a Fulbright Scholar in Chile in 2014, where he taught at the Universidad Viña del Mar and conducted research on the role of the public defender in Chile's criminal justice system.

King's scholarship focuses on indigent criminal defense systems and the right to counsel, as well as criminal defense and prosecution ethics. Among other journals, his work has been published in the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review, the Georgia Law Review, and the Georgetown Law Journal. At Rutgers, King teaches Criminal Procedure, Evidence, Professional Responsibility, and Sentencing.
