Rutgers Law School honored a distinguished civil rights advocate and 10 exceptional student leaders at the 2026 Mary Philbrook Public Interest Award Celebration, an annual tradition recognizing individuals whose commitment to public service reflects the legacy of pioneering New Jersey attorney and women's rights advocate Mary Philbrook. This year's award was presented to Vincent Warren ’93, executive director of the Center for Constitutional Rights, on October 8 at the Rutgers-Camden Campus Center.

“To have my name connected to [Mary Philbrook’s] is an honor that I don’t take lightly because her story is the story of this profession at its best,” Warren remarked. “It’s a story of us as lawyers at our best. A person who is shut out by the rules who insisted on changing them and, in doing so, opened the door for everyone else who followed.”

Warren has spent his career challenging racial injustice, discriminatory policing, and human rights abuses through litigation and advocacy. Under his leadership, the Center for Constitutional Rights successfully challenged the New York Police Department's stop-and-frisk practices, fought prolonged solitary confinement in California prisons, and advanced protections for LGBTQIA+ communities worldwide. His work continues to address issues ranging from immigrant rights and government accountability to racial and social justice.

Co-founded by Rutgers Law Professor Arthur Kinoy in 1966, who was one of Warren’s Law professors in Newark, the Center for Constitutional Rights is currently challenging the abuse of migrants at the U.S. Southern Border, the Muslim Ban, the torture of prisoners in Abu Ghraib, and the criminalization of transgender people. Previously, Vince monitored South Africa's historic Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings and was a senior staff attorney at the ACLU and a criminal defense attorney for the Legal Aid Society in Brooklyn.

Morgan Humphrey ’21 introduced Warren at the ceremony with approximately 120 attendees. She earned a prestigious Fried Frank Civil Rights Fellowship that enabled her to work for two years at NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF). She now works at LDF full-time.

Rutgers Law’s Pro Bono and Public Interest Program Associate Dean Jill Friedman said, “To me, this is why Ann [Freedman] started the Philbrook 41 years ago. It’s people like Vince who inspire people like Morgan who, in turn, inspire people like you to stand up and fight like a Rutgers Law alum.”

The celebration also recognized 10 student honorees whose dedication to pro bono service, advocacy, leadership, and community engagement exemplifies the spirit of Mary Philbrook.

Collectively, this year's student honorees contributed hundreds of hours of pro bono service through clinics, fellowships, community advocacy projects, and student organizations. Their work has supported survivors of domestic violence, immigrants and asylum seekers, tenants facing housing instability, individuals seeking bankruptcy relief and expungements, youth and families in underserved communities, and students pursuing legal careers.

"For more than four decades, the Philbrook Awards have celebrated the belief that lawyers can be agents of positive change," said Rutgers Law Dean Johanna Bond. "This year’s student honorees demonstrate that the next generation of Rutgers Law advocates is already making a meaningful difference in their communities. Vincent Warren’s extraordinary career and tireless advocacy promoting civil rights exemplifies that commitment. Together, our honorees carry forward Mary Philbrook’s legacy of courage, compassion, and commitment to justice."

This year’s celebration also recognized the achievements of Dean Friedman and Associate Professor Ann Freedman who are both retiring this academic year. Freedman founded the Philbrook celebration in 1986. The annual event has become one of Rutgers Law's most cherished traditions.

The celebration honors the legacy of Mary Philbrook, who became one of New Jersey's first female attorneys after gaining admission to the bar in 1895. Throughout her career, Philbrook championed legal aid, child labor reform, women's suffrage, juvenile justice reform, and equal rights under the law. She later became the first woman admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court from New Jersey and devoted her life to expanding opportunities and protections for women and underserved communities. Today, the award that bears her name recognizes individuals whose work demonstrates a steadfast commitment to justice, equality, and service.

Sponsors for this year’s celebration include the Camden and Burlington County Bar Foundations, Association for Public Interest Law (APIL), the Rutgers Law School Alumni Association-Camden, and the Women's Law Caucus.

The event was the culmination of Philbrook Week which included two Lunch & Learn lectures and a service project. Students made 400 sandwiches to be served at Cathedral Kitchen, the largest emergency food provider in Camden.
