October 3, 2023: Total Information Awareness: The High Costs of Post-9/11 U.S. Mass Surveillance (Recorded)

Total Information Awareness: The High Costs of Post-9/11 U.S. Mass Surveillance
Tuesday, October 3, 2023
1:00 - 2:00 PM ET
Watch The Recording!

The United States has witnessed an explosive expansion of mass surveillance since the 9/11 attacks. The pervasive fear, Islamophobia, xenophobia, weakened civil liberties protections, and exponentially increased funding and surveillance capitalism of the post-9/11 era have enabled an unprecedented breadth and scale of surveillance reigning across the United States today—disproportionately impacting Muslims, immigrants, and protesters for racial, environmental, and labor justice. Today’s expansive, complex mass surveillance infrastructure obscures financial costs and has brought on controversial and consequential policy debates.

Speakers:

  • Jessica Katzenstein | report author, Postdoctoral Fellow in the Inequality in America Initiative at Harvard University, National Science Foundation SBE Postdoctoral Research Fellow, and Visiting Scholar at Arizona State University

Rutgers Law School's dynamic locations in Camden and Newark are ideal for aspiring attorneys. Whichever New Jersey campus you choose, you'll have access to two major legal and economic hubs, Philadelphia and New York City.

Both Camden and Newark offer the student-centered experience and personal attention of a smaller law school with all the resources, educational opportunities, and reputational advantages of a large, nationally-known law school.

Graduate housing is available at both locations.

  • Camden

Within the heart of a major metropolitan area, Rutgers Law's Camden location boasts the best of two vibrant cities: Camden and Philadelphia. The welcoming Rutgers–Camden campus is comfortable (combining green space with urban convenience) and compact (everything’s within a 10-minute walk). Just steps away from a vibrant waterfront district with breathtaking views of Philadelphia, our Camden location puts you within minutes of everything the region offers. It’s all right here: the arts, history, sports, culture, restaurants, and some of the best career-building internships and civic engagement options in the nation.

  • Newark

Students in Newark enjoy a lively campus experience in New Jersey’s largest city. Within walking distance of the law school, you will find the Newark Museum, NJ Performing Arts Center, downtown arts district, a professional sports arena, and a wide selection of eclectic restaurants. It’s a short walk to Penn Station, where New York City, and all it offers, is a quick train ride away.
